(originallyBuchananElectric Steel Company, located in Michigan) built a prototype cartcalled theTructractor with a gas engine and three wheels to help move sand androughcastings around their factory. Though not easy to use and rather unsafe(thesteering was reversed and there were no brakes), the fork cart hadsignificantadvantages over the platform trucks typically used in industry at thetime.Visitors to the factory began asking for their own carts, but becauseof WorldWar I the supplies were not available to the Clark employees to beginproduction. This remained the case until an officer in the US Army visited theClarkfactory and saw potential for the cart in transporting explosivesduring thewar.
Commissioned by the military, this led to the eventual productionof themodel Truclift that experts agree was the first hydraulic lift truck intheworld. In the 1920s, the company began expanding, constructing a newfacilityin Battle Creek, Michigan, and releasing new Duat, CLARKat, CLARKtor,andTructier models. In fact, the CLARKtor holds the record for the longesteverproduction span among lift trucks. With these foundational steps, Clark went on to become the marketleader inproduction of, providing 90% of the American Forces' tow and lift trucksduring World War II. After the war, Clark continued innovating with electric forklift modelsand anew production facility in Germany. For the next few decades, Clarkacquiredthe forklift production branches of many other companies, but the early2000ssaw financial trouble for the company and even a production standstillin 2001.After filing for bankruptcy twice and changing ownership many times,Clark hasexisted as Clark Central Parts since 2003.
