Using the electronic chassis adjustment Dynamic ESA you can comfortably adapt your motorcycle to the actual vehicle load. Via ride height sensors, Dynamic ESA detects the movements in the chassis and suspension and responds to the same by adjusting the damper valves.
The chassis and suspension will thus be adapted to the characteristics of the terrain. Starting from the basic setting NORMAL, the damping can be made harder (HARD) or softer (SOFT). Dynamic ESA automatically calibrates itself at regular intervals when the vehicle is at standstill and the engine is running to guarantee the system operates correctly. Chassis and suspension adjustments are unavailable during calibration.
The setting of the chassis and suspension and the number of the selectable damping variants depend on the riding mode selected. The damping defined by the riding mode can be changed by the rider. If the coding plug is not fitted, the basic setting specified by the riding mode will be set after each mode change. If the coding plug is fitted, the driver's adjustments are retained for all modes.

Manoeuvring motorcycles over dilapidated bridges, crossing rivers with the GS and changing tyres in a hurry: the International GS Trophy is an enduro challenge like no other.
In 2016 it was time for the event once again. 19 teams from all over the world rode their BMW R 1200 GS motorcycles across northern Thailand. The GS riders conquered 1,400 kilometres, 19 special tests and seven daily stages. They crossed jungles, dams and rain forests, enduring brutal heat and high humidity.
The sixth International GS Trophy left them physically exhausted but satisfied in every other respect. 'The sixth edition of the International GS Trophy was not for the faint of heart: teams had to endure seven days full of special challenges and highly intense daily stages in temperatures of over 30 degrees. These included exhausting river crossings, arduous journeys through mountainous regions and difficult agility challenges. 'The competition was tough and exciting from beginning to end,' remarked Heiner Faust, Head of Sales and Marketing at BMW Motorrad. And he was not exaggerating: The Int. GS Trophy 2016 was quite something. Challenges with names like 'Broken Bridge', 'Pit Stop', and 'Helicopter Pad', only hint at the kind of demanding tasks facing the participants.
Over the seven days, GS riders had to complete a total of 19 tests, all requiring riding skills, agility and team spirit. But the special tests were not the only reasons for participants to break out in a sweat. Temperatures of over 30°C brought to mind the 2010 Int. GS Trophy in South Africa. Together with the high humidity of Southeast Asia, it was among our hottest events ever. Enjoy the confident feel of a boxer with an upright and relaxed riding position, coupled with modern technology.
Choose from countless customizing options to integrate your own unique ideas. The R nineT Urban G/S makes a clear statement: It pays tribute to the early days of BMW Motorrad's G/S success story. Just one look and it's clear that the R nineT Urban G/S captures the off-road spirit of that era. At the same time, its riding characteristics make it a true member of today's R nineT family. You can't lift a 238-kilo motorcycle over a tree trunk by yourself.
And that was actually the whole point. The teams had to demonstrate what team spirit means. Pulling the GS on a gravel road in the scorching heat. This challenge pushed the teams to their limits. But the riders didn't give up and instead joined forces to pull the heavily loaded bike on the bumpy path.
The extreme challenges that the riders experienced in Thailand brought them closer together. They forged a community and friendships that will endure beyond their shared adventure.
Participants hailed from every corner of the earth and met for the first time at the Int. But from the very beginning, this enduro adventure enjoyed an extremely supportive atmosphere.

The design draws its inspiration directly from the first motorcycles. It is reminiscent of the era of the 1970's and 80's. But its roots go deeper. Even the very first motorcycle from BMW was simple, reduced and dynamic. Already in 1923 the heart of the entire concept was the BMW opposed-twin engine.
At the same time, it offers you many options to customise your motorcycle. You can realize your dreams: of your bike and your lifestyle. You will feel where it comes from Whether you're customising it or enjoying the thrill of opening the throttle. Sometimes, adventure just comes to you out – you just have to come across the right people. Herbert Unger met several of these people on his journey through New Zealand and experienced adventures that cannot be found in any travel guide. He met gold miners, crazy Kiwis, shepherds and fishermen. It is often the unexpected encounters that hold the promise of adventure and they uasually happen to people like Herbert who are open-minded, curious and keen to approach strangers – this is the Spirit of GS.

Like almost everywhere in Scandinavia, the time of year during which you can ride on the roads in Sweden is very short. On the rugged terrain of the north, snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures set the tone more than half of the year. However, the lakes that become frozen over open up many new opportunities for riders, such as Robert, who's 25.
Lakes are nothing other than water - hardened water. All that's needed is a little creativity in the workshop, tyres with spikes, a playful attitude and lots of courage. In a motorcycle accident, every minute counts. In order for those affected to be helped immediately, BMW Motorrad has developed the 'intelligent emergency call' (ECALL) optional accessory. The 'intelligent emergency call' automatically contacts the BMW call centre in case of an accident to activate the chain of rescue as quickly as possible and – if possible – to establish initial contact with the victim. In addition, the system can also be activated manually. The use of ECALL systems like these has been proven to enable the emergency services to reach the accident location more quickly. Driving experiences, driving shows, live performances: For three days, Munich's Olympic Park was a celebration of the BMW Group. The BMW Festival from 9 to 11 September opened up new realms of experience that transported visitors to the mobility world of the future.
The festival pavilion between the Olympiahalle and the Olympic Stadium was a Mecca for motorcycle lovers. That's because BMW Motorrad was showcasing the brand's latest bikes on Coubertinplatz. Just a few steps from the main stage, BMW Yachtsport, BMW Golfsport and BMW Lifestyle's open-air showroom were bursting with luminous dreamscapes at the edge of the Olympic Lake.
The BMW 7 Series and its innovations were presented in exclusive shows on the lake stage, while the peninsula of the Olympic lake became a fun zone for outdoor lovers and families with children. Vintage BMW fans encountered automotive gems from the past while they strolled through the park. Garmisch-Partenkirchen has been setting aside the first weekend in July for two-wheeler fans from all over the world since 2002. They all travel to the German Alpine setting in order to celebrate with like-minded people. The festival combines the various facets of the motorcycling world, ranging from customising to adventure and from stunt riding to racing. We look back on the BMW Motorrad Days 2016, before Garmisch-Partenkirchen will once again become the centre of the motorcycle culture from 7 to 9 July. After a brief stint in India, Edgar Heinrich returned to Munich to lead the BMW Motorrad design team.
It was a happy return for the motorcycle enthusiast, who began his career at BMW in 1986. He spearheaded the design of many BMW motorcycles: the Paris-Dakar rally bike, the K 1200 S and R, the HP2 Enduro, the R 1150 GS, the R 1200 GS and most recently the S 1000 RR. Before his time at Indian automaker Bajaj, he was also involved in the design of the K 1600 GT and GTL touring bikes as well as the C 600 Sport and the C 650 GT maxi scooter. All of them were successful products that expanded the horizons of this established market segment and attracted many new customers to the brand. In an exclusive interview with BMW Motorrad, Edgar Heinrich talks about his passion for designing, collecting and restoring motorcycles of all kinds. It's not just the smell of petrol and the sound of motors that fascinate motorcycle enthusiasts at Pure&Crafted; so too do individual art works – handmade and with an incredible attention to detail.

We look back on the BMW Motorrad Days 2016, before Garmisch-Partenkirchen will once again become the centre of the motorcycle culture from 7 to 9 July. In 2013, BMW Motorrad celebrated the 40th birthday of a real icon: the BMW R 90 S.
With a top speed of almost 200 km/h, it was one of the fastest motorcycles of its time. This was facilitated by what was at the time a revolutionary innovation; never before had a designer contributed to the development of a motorcycle. Yet it was precisely this that let to the pioneering front trim panel on the BMW R 90 S.
Which was also available as standard for the first time. Soon, other manufacturers would follow suit and develop an aerodynamically optimised front and rear trim. Something like this only happens if you really have petrol in your blood and an insatiable appetite for tarmac: 24 mix-and-match petrolheads saw the 1/8 mile at the atmospheric Glemseck 101 merely as a warm-up round for a trip to the United Kingdom.
From the province they headed straight on to London. The destination of this journey comprising over 1,222 kilometres: the legendary Ace Cafe – itself a founding member of the Glemseck 101 event. At this almost magical place, the traditional Ace Cafe reunion awaits the participants of the Continental Run.
In brief: the party picked up right where it left off. The R 1200 GS is THE GS. This model founded the dual-sport motorcycle segment – and is still leading it confidently today. The versatile road performance and comfort in any terrain, combined with the legendary robustness and the expertise from over 36 years of GS development result in a motorcycle that does not shy away from competitors.
Numerous test triumphs and technical magazine awards prove why it’s no accident that the “GS” model is one of the top-selling motorcycles worldwide in its category. The new model includes enhanced touring ability as well as off-road performance. More comfort, more dynamics and more fun. There's no International GS Trophy without the USA.
Since the very beginning the USA has sent three riders to the race, this year it will be for the sixth time. At the International GS Trophy in 2008, USA took first place, but now the competition has become much bigger. In Mongolia, the highly motivated team will start with Thomas Dean Thompson (55) from Colorado, plumbing and hydronic heat system contractor, Matthew James Kelley (49) from Ohio, maintenance mechanic, and David Scott Vaughan (29) from Florida, service advisor in the automotive branch. The team members are ready to push themselves. No matter your riding style, there's a rider training course to help enhance your abilities, increase your comfort and maximize your enjoyment of your time on two wheels.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse℠ is the perfect jumpstart for those who got their first set of two wheels or are returning to riding after a long time away. BMW's own Performance Center offers a variety of on-road and off-road courses at its Spartanburg, South Carolina facility. If you are looking to upgrade your riding skills for the road or the track, California Superbike School offers coaching on S 1000 RRs on tracks across the country. And for those wanting to experience adventure riding, RawHyde Adventures offers training and trips on the range of GS models. In an age before email, the internet, smartphones and satnavs – and in an age when women hardly ever travelled alone to adventurous countries – Elspeth achieved something that is still remarkable today. Thirty-five years after she set off on her 35,000 miles (56,000 km) adventure on her 1974 BMW R 60/6, the first British woman to motorcycle around the world has finally published ‘Lone Rider’, a book about her travels — a global journey that has inspired countless adventure riders to attempt their own long-distance trips.
