If the primary is leaking on the backside, you must pull the entire primary drive to gain access to the backside. Start by draining the primary. Disconnect the battery, remove the outer primary cover, jackshaft for the starter, the engine sprocket nut, remove the circlip and remove the clutch rod adjuster, remove the mainshaft nut to get the clutch off (left-handed threads), primary chain adjuster. From the right side of the bike, remove the exhaust system to gain access to the starter.

Remove the starter. Go back to the left side and remove the bolts that secure the inner primary to the engine and transmission.

Once you have all the bolts out, the primary cover should come off easily. If it doesn't, look for a bolt that you may have missed including on the backside. Now that you have the inner primary cover off, you can replace the seal on the backside of the cover.

Install the seal but before you put the cover back on, you must lubricate the inner lips of the seal where it rides on the mainshaft. Many people don't do this and they destroy the seal in the first five seconds of running.

Without lubrication, the mainshaft turns so fast that friction will build up heat and damage the seal within the first few seconds of operation before oil can get to the seal. Lubricate that seal. Now, Since you've got the inner primary off, there are some seals in the transmission that should be replaced as well. I always replace every seal back there everytime I go into that area.

Replace the large final drive gear seal as the thin seal between the mainshaft and the final drive gear. 2018 gm pontiac grand prix repair manual. I also replace the Quad Seal behind the spacer behind the belt pulley. This will require the special tools necessary to remove the pulley. If you have those, I'd recommend doing this job as well. As you can see, this is not a job for the faint of heart. It's a complicated job and a lenthy job. This is why the dealer charges so much to do the job.

Now, my experience on doing this job is on the earlier Evo and Shovelhead models but the Twin Cam can't be that much different. I'll help as much as I can via this medium but I must recommend that you purchase a service manual. This medium does have it's limitations. Good Luck Steve Aug 05, 2010. You didn't say what year model you Road King was but it's basically the same on Evo models or the Twin Cam models. First, disconnect the battery.

Don't want to lose any fingers. You have to take the jack shaft loose from the starter in order to get the starter out. To do this, drain the oil out of the primary and take the outer cover off. Use a pair of snap ring pliers and remove the clutch adjuster bolt from the center of the clutch pack. Remove the nut holding the clutch pack onto the main shaft.

This nut has left-handed threads. Pull the clutch pack outwards as much as the primary chain will allow. Usually, this will give you enough room to get the jackshaft out. Bend the small locktab back, take the long bolt out of the center of the jackshaft. Remove the jack shaft paying particular attention to the direction the center sleeve is facing.

If you can't get the jackshaft out, you'll have to pull the compensating sprocket and remove the entire primary drive. Now, on the other side of the bike, remove the exhaust system if it's in the way of getting at the starter. Remove anything else that may interfere with access to the starter. Disconnect the large battery cable going to the starter and the small wire that plugs in at the top of the starter. There are two large socket head bolts that hold the starter onto the inner primary cover. They can be difficult to get to. Remove these two bolts and work the starter out.

But, before you go to all that work, are you sure you have a starter problem. That's a lot of work only to find that it doesn't fix the problem. If you'd like to talk about the problem first, post that with as much information as possible. Nov 07, 2009. You must remove the primary to reach 2 bolts holding in the starter. This is a pretty big job, first completely loosen the clutch cable, remove the derby cover, disconnect clutch cable, remove inspection cover, drain primary fluid, loosen primary chain tension er, remove shifter linkage, remove primary cover ( use a Styrofoam board to place bolts in order due to different lenghts), remove ramp and ball assembly ( need snap ring plyers), using a tool to lock the clutch basket and primary drive remove bolts( I don't remember which but one removes left hand), you now can reach the bolts holding in the starter. As I stated this is a pretty big job and you should have a manuel before starting, if you don't want to buy one you can check one out at most library's.

Reverse to install and remember LOCK TITE everything. Jun 07, 2009. The engine oil flows through the starter clutch which acts as a centrfugal oil filter. Sludge builds up and causes the starter clutch to slip. It is possible to replace the Benelli 900 starter clutch without having to remove the engine. It requires removing the clutch, then the side casing and gears.

The sump needs to be removed.middle exhauster header pipes first. The lh engine cover and oil pump also needs to be removed. The primary drive shaft can then be removed from the RHS of the engine.

The primary drive chain and satrer clutch assembly will now drop enough to enable the removal of the sprocket from the starter clutch (it is a bit tight and then the rest of the starter clutch will come out of the chain. Be aware that the oil pump drive connector is on the end of the primary drive shaft and care needs to be exercised. This is possible if due caution and care is taken. Assembly id basically reverse of above. Happy fixing. Mar 31, 2009.

U can of course remove the outer primary without removing the clutch basket. But if u need to remove the entire primary, you'll have to remove the primary chain and the clutch, as well as the compensating sprocket, and that is a huge job.

I have installed many forward controls and have never had to even open the primary. Usually, all u need to do is change out the shift rod. I wouldnt attempt this without a shop manual - good luck Mar 16, 2009.
